Growth in Solar

"The National Solar Jobs Census 2016 found that solar industry employment growth outpaced the overall U.S. economy by 17 times as it increased by over 51,000 jobs, for a total of 260,077 U.S. solar workers. The solar workforce grew by 25% over 2015, the largest annual growth percentage since The Solar Foundation’s first National Solar Jobs Census was released in 2010."

Megaregions

"As metropolitan regions continued to expand throughout the second half of the 20th century their boundaries began to blur, creating a new scale of geography now known as the megaregion. Interlocking economic systems, shared natural resources and ecosystems, and common transportation systems link these population centers together. As continued population growth and low density settlement patterns place increasing pressure on these systems, there is greater impetus to coordinate policy at this expanded scale."

Technology and the Reduction of the US Military

Improvements in technology have enabled the United States to save a lot of money by reducing the size of the US Military. The US Military had over 3.5 million service men and women in 1968. It is now under 1.4 million.

I spent two active duty years in Marine Air Control and Air Defense in 1967 and 1970. We had HAWK Missiles to shoot at airplanes, ASRT Air Support Radar Teams to control bombing, and the DASC Direct Air Support Squadron to control Air.

The HAWKs and ASRTs are long gone, replaced with better technology and far fewer people. The elimination of the units that provided this equipment and service saved the cost of about 3,000 Marines.

Illegal Immigration

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. has stabilized in recent years after decades of rapid growth. But the origin countries of unauthorized immigrants have shifted, with the number from Mexico declining since 2009 and the number from elsewhere rising, according to the latest Pew Research Center estimates.

Burnham Plan For Chicago

.

The City looks great. It keeps getting better looking. And tourism has become very large. There must have been 50 tourist boats in the Chicago River and along Navy Pier - a huge increase from a few years ago.

I would estimate about 30% of the Burnham Plan was actually constructed. Many proposals were too difficult or costly for the City to undertake. But what was built substantially improved the City.

I think the city should still build a few more of his proposals. The second Pier should be built - would add public access and land into Lake Michigan. And this time it could be "Green" and sustainable, improving the natural environment while providing more public open space next to downtown and the lakefront.

And the central train terminal should be built, with better interface among all public transit systems and automobiles.

Chicago is a great city. And looking better every year.

But having said all that, I prefer to live in Manatee County in Florida. Our metro area is about 800,000 people, a very nice size. The 8,000,000 people in the Chicago Metro area is a few too many.
