Olmsted and Moses

Olmsted the Hero, Moses the Villain

History views master planners Frederick Law Olmsted and Robert Moses very differently.
Left, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Right, planner Robert Moses.(Archive.org/Library of Congress)

They both were top-down, hard-charging master planners, creatures of authorities and commissions that helped them get things done. Both perturbed by the jarring cacophony of the city, they sought the best for the American people, and produced glorious public recreation facilities known the world over. They both had a fondness for poetry, and both were accepted at Yale.

Yet history views Frederick Law Olmsted and Robert Moses very differently. Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, is lauded as a visionary, and places he designed, like Boston’s Emerald Necklace and New York’s Central Park, are cherished treasures. If Moses gets credit for Jones Beach, which he created as his master-builder career was just getting going in the 1920s, it’s just as likely he will be vilified for making the parkway bridges too low so buses couldn’t get there—a legend that has lived on despite being untrue.

Return of Private U.S. Passenger Rail

Image The Triumphant Return of Private U.S. Passenger Rail

Can new train service between Miami and Orlando be a model for the rest of the country?
A rendering of All Aboard Florida's rail station in downtown Miami. (All Aboard Florida)
MIAMI—Beginning in 2016, All Aboard Florida will run 32 departures a day between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, with service extending to Orlando.* With a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour, the trains will complete the 240-mile journey in less than three hours. In South Florida, around the three initial stations, the company will develop 4.2 million square feet of real estate. In Orlando, the terminus will be located at the airport and connect to a new commuter rail line at a sparkling, state-funded $215 million transportation hub.

It's a big project by any standard, but it looms even larger in historical context. No private intercity passenger rail line has operated in the United States in 30 years — and it has been longer still since a new service was introduced. "You'd have to go back over 100 years to find a significant investment in private intercity rail in the U.S.," says David Levinson, a transportation analyst at the University of Minnesota.

D-Day Landing Sites Then and Now: Normandy Beaches in 1944 and 70 Years Later

On June 6, 1944, Allied soldiers descended on the beaches of Normandy for D-Day, an operation that turned the tide of the Second World War against the Nazis, marking the beginning of the end of the conflict.
Today, as many around the world prepare to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the landings, pictures of tourists soaking up the sun on Normandy's beaches stand in stark contrast to images taken around the time of the invasion.
Reuters photographer Chris Helgren compiled archive pictures taken during the invasion and went back to the same places to photograph them as they appear today.

Corruption Index

The Corruption Perception Index rates nations by corruption. The United States is rated 19 out 177 Countries.  Our neighbor Canada is less corrupt, rated at number 9, while Mexico is number 106.

Russia is 127 while the Ukraine and Iran are tied at 144.  Most of our G-7 partners are quality ethical countries - part of the reason they are successful.

Iraq is 171 while Afghanistan is 175. So we invaded and tried to modernize these crooked countries into a functioning democracy with a fair and good economic system.  Really stupid on our part.

Wringing corruption out of government and society is a challenge. You can't have a quality country with rampant corruption. You top officials simply steal the country blind.
