Vehicle Emissions vs. Miles Traveled

We have made substantial progress in air quality over the years.  I remember vividly as a small child driving through Gary in the 1050's. Amazing coal fired open furnaces were creating steel - great for the economy, not so good for air quality.  Most of our homes had coal fired furnaces - these were replaced with natural gas, which reduced air pollution. I can remember flying into Chicago in the late 1960's, and seeing the metro area covered with a smog cloud. Never see that now.

I hitchhiked through Las Angeles in 1974.  My eyes burned from the air pollution and you could not see the Hollywood sign.  The air quality is much better now in LA.

When you visit other countries you quickly notice the air quality. China is improving now, but their air quality was and still very bad.
